Beware, these are my opinions, if you don't agree don't start WW3, because Doctor Who have already did that one!
So we were all, or some of us were all watching Doctor Who is 2005, enjoying the thrilling episodes RTD and his team were making, many of these were well written and enjoyable, Rose and the Empty Child being some of them. Others were decent, The End of the World, the Unquiet Dead, Aliens of London and WW3, and The Doctor Dances. And others were absolutely dreadful, and those I will not name. So we were watching these episodes, having our own opinions then came the finale. Many fans probably wondered how this would work in Doctor Who, because of course in the Classic Series finales were the same as every other story made in that season, but of course this is the 21st century and television has moved on.
I didn't actually watch this two part epic (or not epic, wait until the end to find out) because I was 6, and as you may know 6 year olds have a very small attention span. It was only until the following year when Series 28 was airing that I watched it.
Bad Wolf, was brilliant, it had all the characteristics of a fab Doctor Who episode, and the idea of game shows in space, (Ok it was Big Brother, but there was also the weakest link) was very clever. However it could have had a more creepy feel to it like the Long Game did, however that episode makes me want to drown myself. In the classic series episodes like this would always have a different feel to it, there would be a monster or villain present, wether it was just a claw, or a body, or some wreckage or trail of destruction left behind. But of course this was rather impossible with the..., err..... monsters / golden dust bins that were awaiting us.
Overall the characters are strong, there is quite a bit of good writing, however the doctor getting out so many situations using the sonic screwedriver, sorry, the sonic screwdriver is just ridiculous. As Barry Letts RIP once said, "In the show right now the sonic screwdriver is a magic wand, it can do anything!" Which is so true, and the design isn't that good anyway. The idea of bringing back satellite 5 was bad, why link two stories for no real reason, they already had a series link, Bad Wolf, why another? Why not some other creepy space station that has a different feel to it. Probably because they waisted their budget on all the CGI that will come up in the finale.
Another major problem is the fact that they actually showed Captain Jack naked, fair enough we didn't see all his body (Although I'm sure we would have if someone at the BBC hadn't stopped RTD) but even almost seeing him naked on a family show like DW, is pushing the boundries of...., I think you know what a bit far. And then he some how has a gun hiding somewhere, (Three guesses where if he's naked) and blows a couple of androids head's off then contructs a weapon of great power that can blow anything to bits, out of some junk from a fashion show, where did he get the screws to hold it all together, or the equipment? I mean I know he took that weird device they used to strip him, but surely it didn't already have a BLAST TO PIECES function.
Rose was probably my favourtie character of the whole bloomin episode, (NO CRYING, NO SNOGGING, GET'S SHOT) what else do I want? So Rose gets into the final 2 of the weekest link up against the Anne Droid, that was a good joke. But how did she, she's from the 21st century for goodness sake, she knows nothing time wise, luckily there is a question to do with the Face of Boe, maybe the questions that we didn't see were, "Are you male or female", "Do you have children?"
Anyway, onto the rubbish cliffhanger, Rose get's transported to a mysterious place just before the Doctor and Captain Naked can save her, (Oh wait, at this point Captain Jack has some clothes on, few.) The Doctor and co discover a dalek war fleet and of course Rose happens to be on board, then millions of Daleks appear chanting exterminate.
Not brilliant and certainly reflected on how bad the episode to come would be. Dalek invasion, bang, bang, bang, lots of fighting, Captain Jack goes all nuts with a machine gun. The Dalek Emperor does nothing, Rose turns into a super hero and disintegrates the dalek fleet, and brings Captain Jack back to life because she inhaled the Time Vortex or something, oh yeah, she looked into the heart of the TARDIS. A lot of crying, the Doctor has to set up a delta wave to destroy the daleks, the daleks invade earth. Basiclly the typical RTD finale that we would be getting used to in later years. The plot is more basic than a nursery rhyme book. And of course as a major jaw dropper at the end the doctor regenerates, and some Scottish bloke with messed up hair appears and says Barcelona. Maybe it was time for a good doctor. If any of you thought that when you saw him, you were badly wrong.
All and all this story doesn't deserve to be counted as one story, one half is brilliant, the other half is so bad I took the liberty of only giving it one paragraph in this review, so I'll give two ratings.
Bad Wolf: 8.9
Parting of the Ways: 7.6
