“The Flood” Doctor Who Comic Review

The Flood is unique in comic strips. Actually, is it? I don’t know, The Flood is the first classic Doctor Who comic I’ve ever read. Actually, I’ve also read “Where Nobody Knows Your Name”, also in the comic compilation The Flood. So The Flood. I have to say, its an epic story, which puts the Doctor and alien fish, sorry, shape-shifter companion Destrii right into the heart of a Cyber Battle.

The Doctor. Even in his last comic, the 8th Doctor is still continuing what he started in the TV Movie. The determined nature of his character, mixed with his humour and his ‘enchanting’ smile that he brings to the role. His youth is captured still, in a now older Doctor with the constant costume alterations, it brings freshness and youthfulness to the role. His determined nature when he is in the vortex, his determination to save the Destrii, and his determination to stop the Cybermen by sacrificing himself. His character doesn’t change, at core, he remains the same humorous yet determined and sometimes passionate Doctor.

Destrii is a very determined companion, working well with the Doctor but not being afraid to tackle things on her own. Her attack on the Cybermen is determined and constant, to save two people she’s only just met. She never gives in and tries constantly to help the Doctor no matter what. She knows that she needs him and admits it at one point, and she is, if you like a slightly more childish and more attitude version of Grace. Obviously the giant fish is a big difference.

I LOVE THE CYBERMEN! Their cold nature, their latest plan and their skeletal look is amazing, they all work well together, and I love their different weapons and the fact that these Cybermen are seemingly invincible. These Cybermen are scary and they mean business, and anyone who doesn’t find them and that first hologram picture of them sinister, is also a Cyberman.

The one other lovely thing about this comic is Grace! I actually said her name out loud when I saw her. I loved Grace in the TV Movie and just an appearance from her here is absolutely fantastic. It’s lovely to see her back, just a cameo, and to see that the comic still has an appreciation for proper Who and proper 8th Doctor is brilliant!

It is a fantastic story, with a lovely and intriguing narration from Izzy. The Cyberman are cold killers, skeletal, robotic and still after New Mondas. The Doctor is the same as always, his Doctor-ness coming through brilliantly, his determination second to none, and his humour still brightening the day. Even if he does get compared to Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen…

It is a fantastic comic, and such a shame they couldn’t show the regeneration.
