Before I merrily insult The Leisure Hive this weekend, I thought I’d give Doctor Who some good, and some bad, awards for their work in 2010. (2010 in this case implies Doctor Who Series 5, The End of Time P2 is not included).
BEST ACTOR
Matt Smith
Arthur Darvill
Tony Curran
Ian McNeice
The award goes to Matt Smith. This Actor is a breath of fresh air and he brings a new energy (the type that we haven’t seen since Peter Davison or Paul McGann) to the role. This Doctor is one of the most active, energetic, and alien Doctors yet. He deals with all kinds of situations brilliantly and not one of them betrays his Doctor. Who has also slipped away from the emotional stuff and provided some much more comedic events as the Doctor remembers that he isn’t human.
However, I must say the second best is Arthur Darvill. While not liked by all, he brings a balance to the show, which is needed with someone as highly energetic and over the top as Amy Pond.
BEST ACTRESS
Karen Gillan
Alex Kingston
Caitlin Blackwood
Sophie Okendo
This one has to go to Caitlin Blackwood. For someone who has never acted before, Caitlin gives an amazing performances as Amelia Pond. She is the perfect companion for the Doctor and she works brilliantly with him. it’s just a shame she grew up to be like Amy. It’s almost as if young Amelia and grown up Amy don’t fit with each other, and it makes you wonder why Amelia’s life went so down hill from a start like she had. I think Amy is over the top, and she doesn’t suit the Doctor at all. She’s too mad, she’s too happy, and she’s way too… weird almost. Amy needs to calm down and Karen needs some tips from cousin Caitlin. Because Caitlin is how Amy should be: inquisitive and calm. Not Over the Top and Kissogram….
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR/ACTRESS
Toby Jones
Meera Syal
Samuel (Sam) Davies
James Corden
As much as I think three out of four of these deserve awards, I can only give one. But ignore that, I’m going to award TWO. These two go to Toby Jones. His performance as the Dream Lord was wonderful and chilling and even showed a side to Amy I liked. The second of these is Sam Davies, who played Elliot in The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood. His performance truly was brilliant, and for once, it was great writing by Chris Chibnall.
BEST WRITER
Steven Moffat
Gareth Roberts
Richard Curtis
Mark Gattiss
Toby Whithouse
Simon Nye
There is a reason one writer isn’t on that list, but that’ll be approached later on. The best writer has to be Simon Nye. While I agree that Mark Gattiss and Gareth Roberts wrote excellent episodes, I have to say that the classic series feel to Simon Nye’s “Amy’s Choice” and the brilliant acting it brought on, as well as the fantastic storyline and idea make it, is the best. Simon Nye can clearly write excellent stuff for Doctor Who, and he deserves the award.
Richard Curtis should have got the award, that’s what most will say. Because he was knew, and he brought something new to Doctor Who. But frankly, he didn’t get much of an idea of what Doctor Who is, whereas Simon Nye’s script had everything Curtis’ had, but Nye had an idea of Doctor Who.
BEST RE-DESIGN
The Logo/Insignia
The TARDIS Exterior
The TARDIS Interior
The Title Sequence
The Theme Tune
Frankly I can only give one of these the award – The TARDIS Exterior. It’s a fantastic idea from Steven Moffat to make it look like Peter Cushing’s TARDIS. I love the classic feel to it. BUT WHY HAVE THEY PUT LIGHTS BEHIND THE WINDOWS??? It completely takes away the shades on the windows and makes the exterior a little pointless.
BEST CONTRIBUTION
Steven Moffat
Matt Smith
Karen Gillan
Gareth Roberts
Mark Gattiss
Unfortunately, the contribution award is for 2010 only. If it was for lots of years, Mark Gattiss or Gareth Roberts would win. But it has to be Matt Smith. Matt Smith has put so much into the role and the series, and it really is excellent work. I just feel a slight lack of enthusiasm from the Moff…
BEST STORY
The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
The Eleventh Hour
The Beast Below
Victory of the Daleks
The Lodger
Vincent and the Doctor
Amy’s Choice
Ok, so those are the ones I have the hardest choice about. I’d say out of those 7 (counting the two parter as one story), I’d pick Vincent in last place. The story didn’t amaze me at all. In 6th place, probably Victory. It was good, but not as incredible compared to the others. 5th Place, maybe The Lodger. It was very very impressive nearer the end and I loved the comic. 4th place, The Beast Below – I have a secret love for this story, certain aspects are brilliant. 3rd place, The Eleventh Hour, a great opening story. Then Pandorica/Big Bang and in first place, and winning the award, Amy’s Choice.
WORST ACTOR/ACTRESS
Karen Gillan
Alex Kingston
Arthur Darvill
It has to be out of those three, and the worst one has to be Karen or Alex. Ok, Alex is a brilliant actress and she is great as River Song. But the novelty’s worn off, I’m bored of River Song and Alex’s performance is slipping. Karen Gillian is also another actress that I think wasn’t brilliant. She’s too over the top, too hyper and is quite annoying, not fitting the role of a perfect companion and not suited to the 11th Doctor. Though to be fair, its more the characters I don’t like than the actresses.
WORST RE-DESIGN
The TARDIS Interior
The Title Sequence
The Logo
The Theme Tune
The least worse is the TARDIS Interior. That is acceptable, and I love the corridors and the return of the big scanner. But the orange of the console is too bright and it hasn’t quite got the classic feel I wanted. The other three are hard decisions. The third worse is probably the theme tune. It’s quite good, but gets repetitive and the trumpets, are they necessary?
The worse then: the logo and the title sequence. The title sequence (apart from the lightning) doesn’t work for me at all and the title sequence feels like a half-hearted attempt, not enough effort has gone into it. The logo was brilliant with the DOCTOR above the WHO, but in it’s current form with the insignia, I don’t think the logo really works.
WORST STORY
Vincent and the Doctor
Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
Vampires of Venice
I would have to say Hungry Earth/Cold Blood. It’s got a good character in Elliot, but the other characters are annoying, the new Silurians are rubbish… and annoying. And the whole thing just feels uneventful. Not very good at all. Apart from the clever ending with the crack in time.
WORST WRITER
Steven Moffat
Toby Whithouse
Chris Chibnall
Steven Moffat doesn’t seem to be able to write the 11th Doctor as well as the other writers. The other writers have got it brilliantly, but Steven Moffat isn’t as good at writing his own Doctor. But the worst writer is Chris Chibnall, mainly because he wrote Hungry Earth/Cold Blood, and I didn’t think 42 was that spectacular either.
So. A brilliant series in parts, with a brilliant Doctor. But some of it lacks effort, some stories let the series down and certain redesigns aren’t good. But on the whole… a not bad series.
