The Bit by Bit SJA Review | The Empty Planet Part One

I should start off with a few updates. One, the overall review for The Vault of Secrets will not be coming. Two, the overview review for Death of the Doctor might be up soon, but for now I will simply cover Death of the Doctor with this statement: “Russell T Davies can write Doctor Who type stories. *James faints*”

So yes, Death of the Doctor review soon, as today sees the return of the bit by bit review, this time for THE EMPTY PLANET. Well I expect an empty planet, more will they won’t they with Clyde and the Rani (see what I did there?) and of course big one eyed robots that are pretty colours. No Daleks however.

Sorry if this review is a little all over the place, but I’m watching SJA on my laptop, live obviously, using BBC iPlayer, and writing this at the same time. The wonders of the Windows 7 split screen.

Ok. So. Here we go, Clyde’s introdction, as we always have. Title music started early there…. might just be cos of how I’m watching it. So, Earth. Sarah, Rani, Clyde, Mr Smith. Sound of the Earth. School night, SJ up to something… I think. Doing her nervous pacing up and down… Page 73, last chapter. Good method, can’t say I’ll use it. Rani reading Great Expectations. Good night Mr Chandra, yes.. lovely…. hurry up with the plot. Clyde is drawing, oh Clyde’s mum is back. Shansheeth, brilliant. I want Clyde’s art table….

Rani asleep. How many lights does one person need? Sound of the Earth again, and then nothing. The whole Earth – quiet. Apart from maybe that ringtone. No radio. Nobody home…. Nobody. Vanished. Nobody there. Rani going over to 13 Bannerman Road, nobody home of course. Mr Smith? I dont think so somehow. Mr Smith has gone. Sonic Lipstick… that’ll help…. or not. Mrs Fraser isn’t home. They were up early.

Now time for Clyde I think. Maybe, wind through trees. Glass smashes, very nice. Something’s wrong…. Clearly. Knock on the door. Yeah good weapon. Telly remote. No telephone… could come back. Try and get to the bottom of it? They will I imagine. No noise. Well at least it’s not school. I’d rather choose school though. This is good…. love the plot. Interesting, very interesting. They want an empty planet?

They do find somebody else, I know that much… Then why didn’t it blast them? Not logic, well done Clyde. Why are those two left? Big circle, no thoughts. They need Luke. Not going to Oxford to get him. Adam and Eve…. interesting Clyde….. Ooooh, good. I see no cats. Or people so there you go. Someone in Bon marche. Who will it be? Oh sonic lipstick use one. Bike riding. Oh there he is, they’ve seen him.

Rani, Clyde and Gavin. What if the teabags have disappeared? New episode title for this: The Empty Teapot. Can he keep a secret? Sonic lipstick, alien technology. No alien sightings. There will be a reason why only three are left. Find out why! Interesting noise, very cool. Planes? Gavin’s done a runner. Oh dear. Still looking for Gavin, something wrong with Gavin. Maybe, maybe not.

Is that a Bubbleshock bottle? Conversation about fighting aliens, Clyde and Rani being mates. We know none of this makes sense. Episode could end with robots smashing in window, that does happen. A television is on. About to see the robots I imagine. Rani has just seen Gavin, and they’ll all see the robots. Robots close in – cliffhanger? Maybe, yes it must be. Robots have arrived. Like the storyline, not sure the robots will fit in. Behind you Clyde. Nice robot.

Next time. Robots after humans, and a return of Gavin. Next time looks interesting.

I loved the mystery in this episode, the constant question asking, the tension. The mystery fits in really well and again removes the kid-show feel. Mystery in this makes part one fantastic, and proper. Not sure the robots will work, but we will see tomorrow.

See you tomorrow!

James
