Recent reports have claimed that Arthur Darvill and Karen Gillan are leaving after the current series of Doctor Who. This is all speculation – but who cares, it’s fun to guess.
Karen Gillan recently said this in an interview with What’s on TV? Source credit goes to Doctor Who Spoilers.
"I am playing Jean Shrimpton in a BBC4 drama We’ll Take Manhattan but I have just literally gone from Doctor Who to that so I haven’t had a chance to sit and have a think. I actually would really like to go home to Scotland for a little while and reflect on what has happened and then decide what my next move is, but I don’t know what that is yet."
So she doesn’t know what she’s doing next and may even return to Scotland. So probably not filming Doctor Who. Arthur Darvill recently took a role in Doctor Faustus at the Globe Theatre. He said this:
"Getting a part like Rory was great, but now, coming out of it, I need to go and do something completely different."
So this shows us that Darvill is referring to his character in the past tense – and it sounds like he’s moving on from Doctor Who (again source credit goes to Doctor Who Spoilers and Life, Doctor Who and Combom).
With the possible departure of Amy and Rory – we’re looking for possible new companions. A Good Man Goes to War gives us the most speculation. In my opinion, there are three possible candidates. All of these would need no introduction to be companions, and they’d all be used to aliens and the Doctor.
Catrin played JENNY in A Good Man Goes to War. She first appeared as a Victorian Maid, and soon turned warrior, fighting alongside the Silurian. Her name might mean she is Doctor’s ‘daughter’ Jenny (who survived her first appearance), or it could just be a coincidence. But Jenny survived to the end of Episode 7 – so could she be a new companion?
Neve has played three different Silurians. The two sisters in the Series 5 two-parter, and now the Victorian Silurian, famous for eating Jack the Ripper… But anyway, she knows the Doctor well, she’s a Silurian that isn’t trying to kill him, he’s funny, she gets on with people, and she’d be a kind of Destrii (see 8th Doctor comic strips) type companion.
Now, Christina Chong played Lorna Bucket (awesome name). Lorna met the Doctor in the Gamma Forests, and appeared to be the only goodie in the army of Demon’s Run. She fought alongside the others – but sadly, Lorna was killed during the battle. She did meet her “hero” one more time, but then she died. However – Adeola died in Army of Ghosts and Freema Agyeman still came back to play Martha, so anything is possible. The only annoying thing with Lorna being a companion would be that she was constantly on about how the Doctor is a warrior.
So why some of these are more likely than others, judging by Who history and the events of the mid-series finale, it looks like Jenny is most likely to be a new companion. Another Victorian maid, but this time one who doesn’t scream at everything and is a lot more alien. Also, there could be more to find about Jenny, and her name may become important. As much as I’d love the Silurian as a companion – it’s unlikely. And Lorna Bucket is dead. So that means we’d get a relative of Lorna Bucket who may not be quite as good.
This is all speculation. Amy and Rory may not leave (though it’s almost certainly looking like Rory will). And there could be ANY new companion, not just one we’ve seen before. However, judging by the return of Martha, and even of Nyssa, bringing people back as companions, is something Doctor Who has done and continues to do.
So someone we’ve already seen – could well be the new companion.
